GPS & Location¶
JBalloonNav uses your device's GPS for position, speed, altitude, and bearing.
GPS Lock¶
When GPS Lock is active (icon highlighted), your position stays fixed on screen and the map scrolls underneath you. This is the normal mode during flight.
When GPS Lock is off, you can pan the map freely. Your position marker moves on the map but the view doesn't follow it. Tap 
Find Me to re-centre on your position.
Find Me¶
Centres the map on your current position. If your position is far off-screen, the zoom level also resets to a sensible default.
Background Location¶
By default, GPS tracking pauses when the app is minimised or the screen turns off. To continue recording in the background:
- Grant background location permission when prompted (or in your device settings)
- Enable Settings → Tracking → Track in Background
When background tracking is active, the app runs a foreground service (shown as a persistent notification) to maintain GPS access.
GPS Accuracy¶
GPS accuracy varies by device and environment. At altitude in a balloon, GPS typically provides good horizontal accuracy (3–10 m). Vertical accuracy from GPS is less reliable — consider using Barometric Altitude for more accurate height data.
Keeping the Screen On¶
Enable Settings → Display → Keep Screen On to prevent the screen from turning off during flight. This keeps the map visible without needing to touch the device.
